Anemia (anaemia)

Description

Anemia is a condition that the body doesn't have enough blood cells to carry and transport the oxygen to verious parts of the body. Oxygen is required for the body to produce energy and maintain regular metablism of every organ. It goes natural that anemia makes one feel enegyless (fatigue). By the same token, anemia may have impact on health of the organs. On the other hand, disordor of organs may interrupt production and circulation of the blood cells, and thus, induce anemia.

Anemia may be classified into three categories:

  • anemia of chronic diseases
  • anemia due to defect, disorder of the blood system
  • anemia due to certain physical or nutritional problems

Anemia of Chronic Disease -- Anemia is a common complication of many chronic diseases. These include, but not limited, chronic kidney disease, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, HIV infection, AIDS, chronic inflammatory bowel disease, heart disease.

While the diseases causing anemia are different, there is a common impact of the anemia on different diseases:

  • Anemia makes the disease treatment less effective. Successful treatment of anemia may improve the clinical outcome.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), one of the alternative medicine, is very helpful in providing support to people sufferring from anemia of chronic diseases. The body is a highly coordinated system of different organs. Anemia of chronic diseases is the result of the diseases that persistantly interrupt the orders, cause unbalanced energy consumption, unbalanced metablisms, and finaly damage part or whole of the blood making system and circulation system. In terms of TCM, anemia is a typical status of "blood weakness". The core of TCM is to maintain balance of qi (vital energy), blood and organ's functions. Through thousands of years' practice, nourishing and replenishing the blood is one of the best things that TCM can do. Modern studies have turned out that ingredients of a typical formulated Chinese herbal suppliment have multiple beneficial effects on the organs involved in blood production and health.

Anemia Due To Defect, Disorder Of The Blood Making System -- These are various subtypes of anemia, including aplastic (aplactic) anemia, folate-deficiency anemia, anemia - b12 deficiency (macrocytic anemia) , hemolytic anemia, hemolytic anemia - g-6-pd deficiency, sickle cell anemia, paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, hemoglobin sc disease, hereditary elliptocytosis, hereditary spherocytosis, hereditary ovalocytosis, idiopathic autoimmune hemolytic anemia, non-immune hemolytic anemia caused by chemical or physical agents, secondary immune hemolytic anemia, thalassemia.

Defect in blood making system either makes not enough blood cells, or makes ill red blood cells. Other types of blood cells, e.g. while blood cells and platelets may also be affacted. Disorder of the blood system due to extrinsic factors such as immune response, drug, chemicals usually results in breakdown of the blood cells. A large group of the anemia subtypes belongs to hemolytic anemia -- blood cells are prematurelly distructed (hemolysis), and the speed of the distruction is faster than their production by bone marrow.

Traditional Chinese medicine can provide unique support to people sufferring from the anemia. TCM is unique that it can promotes blood production not only at a certain status of the blood making process such as hormone erythropoietin, but also

    • at various status of the whole hemopoiesis (the term for blood making process) from a bone marrow pluripotent stem cell to the matured red blood cell.
    • promote production of all 3 types of blood cells.
    • promote health of organs involved, including the kidney, liver, intestine, and heart
    • reduces hemolysis,
    • reduces formation of blood clots (thrombosis).

Anemia Due To Certain Physical Or Nutritional Problems -- These include conditions such as: irregular menstruation, pregnancy, giving birth, surgery, aging, stress, iron deficiency, etc.

It should be noted that iron supplement can only be taken when there is iron deficiency. Iron is simply a required element, but has no stimulating effect at all for making blood cells. Overload of iron is toxic and may damage the liver.

TCM can provide support. TCM replenishes blood by promoting balanced functions of an organ, and the interplay among organs, resulting in relieving anemia naturally. Note, help to the body's regulation is bi-directional. For example, either the memsis it too little or too much blood flow, a typical TCM for relieving anemia may help to bring back the normal blood flow. Blood tonic TCM is also energy tonic. This is very helpful to people in weak physical conditions, such as anemia after giving birth, surgery, or aging. The effect is very significant, one could feel in less than one week of use.

  • Symptoms

    Possible symptoms of anemia include:
  • Fatigue
  • Chest pain - angina
  • Shortness of breath
  • Test

Anemia is usually measured by a decrease in the amount of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the red pigment in red blood cells that transports oxygen.

Two common tests are red blood count and hemoglobin level

    Cause

There are various of anemia. The cause varies with the type of anemia. Potential causes include blood loss, nutritional deficits, many diseases, medication reactions, and various problems with the bone marrow. Iron deficiency anemia is most common in women who have heavy menstrual periods

    Risk group

Risk factors of anemia include heavy periods, pregnancy, older age, and chronic diseases such as kidney disease, diabetes, heart disease, cancer; rheumatoid arthritis or inflammatory bowel disease; and persistent infections such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
